Rainfall – Annual Average
Rainfall in the region increases with altitude. This is because rainfall is linked with the process of cloud formation. When the clouds become saturated with water vapour, the saturation rate is exceeded and rain falls. This process is exacerbated by sharp altitude increases. The coast and vast areas of the lowlands of the region received the least rain during the baseline period (less than 740mm annual average). In contrast, the higher altitude areas within the region, namely the uplands in the North York Moors and the Pennines, received between 1060mm and 1300mm of annual average rainfall during the baseline period.
